I Guess the Bill of Rights Only Applies After High School
In yet another landmark robbery of what are supposed to be inalienable rights, the Supreme Court has approved random drug tests for any high school student involved in extracurricular activities. We knew that certain rights would have to be relinqushed after 9/11, in order that the government can try to prevent further terrorist attacks, but I don't think this has anything to do with that. This is pretty disturbing to me. If I was still in high school (and was involved in extracurricular activities), I would simply drop out (of said activities -- not out of school). And I have to assume that many kids will do the same. I thought we encouraged extracurricular activities. I thought people wanted kids to participate in sports, volunteer work, and study programs. Well, now these students will be subjected to the accusatory and fascistic practice of drug testing, without cause or suspicion. What is the point? Remember Clarence Thomas? He was one of the judges on the bench. Why doesn't he order random sexual harassment test for all Supreme Court Judges?

Posted by Hans Franz on 6/28/02 at 2:14 PM EST
