The Evil Genius In the Line of Fire

The picture is slowly coming into focus in the case of the U.S. Attorney firings. It's now become pretty clear what's been going on: Turd Blossom, a.k.a. Karl Rove, and his deputies traveled to various agencies throughout the government, lecturing management there about Republicans' political prospects. The idea was ultimately to maintain the Republican stranglehold on all three branches of government, to cover up and prevent investigation and prosecution of Republican corruption, and to cast a shadow over Democrats wherever possible, regardless of whether or not it was justified. Direct orders were never quite given, as that would have been a blatant violation of the Hatch Act (which forbids the use of government resources for political ends), but blunt hints certainly were made.

Briefings were given to fifteen different agencies, from NASA to Homeland Security, complete with visual aids in the form of Powerpoint presentations, demonstrating which electoral districts were vulnerable for Republicans and which were weak for Democrats and could be turned around.

The best part -- Republican National Committee politics, as partisan as it gets, all done on the taxpayer dime.

And now we're starting to see a "surge" (can't get enough of that word) in investigations, raids and indictments of Republiucan officials. This could be coincidence, but common sense would suggest that, because of the congressional hearings, the DoJ's efforts to impede and obstruct the aforementioned investigations have been significantly thwarted. The floodgates have been opened. With a little luck, this story will actually begin to get legs in the mainstream media. Wake up, Beltway press corps!
